So it seems that having an iPhone these days is the latest fashion accessory. Not to be confused with Obamania, iPhone-mania has been sweeping the planet. Just like large diamond earrings, people seem to flaunt their iPhones every chance they get. At the dinner table, walking down the street, sitting at the library – these are the opportune moments to show it off. The iPhone is the new cigarette – the ultimate symbol of “cool” for our generation. Make no mistake, “cool” cannot be confused with “smart” – Apple’s recent marketing campaign gives us some insight into this as their recent tag line for their new iPod reads:
the funnest iPod ever.
(for more on this, please see my recent post “The Collapse of the English Language“)
The Japanese, however, are the one saving grace in this iPhone-mania gripping the world:
Apple’s iPhone Flops in Japan, Now Sold for Free
Apple’s iPhone is a hit everywhere in the world — except for Japan.
It turns out that Apple’s video-playing, music-downloading, motion-sensing handset is just too, well, backward for the Japanese market.
In fact, the iPhone is such a flop in the Land of the Rising Sun that it’s being given away free with a 2-year contract, Wired News reports.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that carrier charges are a lot cheaper in Japan than they are in the U.S., and Apple hasn’t learned to compete.
Maybe this jealousy is because I’m not “cool” enough…

I hereby proclaim my vendetta against sloppiness! In this, the first of a multi-part editorial on sloppiness, I will introduce both the theory of sloppiness and the reasoning behind my hatred for it.
To be sloppy is to either (1) contain too much liquid, (2) be careless and disorganized or (3), of a garment, be casual and loose fitting. For the purposes of this piece I will be focusing, of course, on the second and third definitions.
Now, to me, being sloppy is a much more general term. I believe that being sloppy encompasses numerous aspects of ones appearance, attitude and speech. It is about presenting yourself in an ill prepared, slapdash, dazed appearance with a laissez-faire attitude.
PART ONE: HISTORY
Now, to see why the civilized world faces this band of guerrilla style scum bags imposing their sloppiness on hard working people, we must look to history in order to see where we went wrong.
Since the beginning of society and the creation of the state, men and women have always presented themselves in a way that respected their bodies equally. For men in 16-18th centuries, the common attire was knickers, button up white shirts and handkerchiefs while businessmen and politicians wore wigs to show their status. This was a time of neatness, manners and conformity. All was well in society.
Then, the industrial revolution happened and the cotton gin made it easier and faster to produce cotton garments and fashion began to spread rapidly. However, men kept a handle on things and as times changed it was still commonplace for a man to wear a shirt and tie on the weekends and suit to work during the week. But it wouldn’t be long until the system changed forever.
Soon after the golden days of the 1920s came the dreaded 1960s. And it was in this decade the term sloppiness entered the hearts and minds of the world’s youth. In a span of ten years guerrilla scallywags terrorized high schools and colleges spreading their liberal propaganda and converting young well mannered youth into authority questioning, ill mannered ass holes, one hit of their bongs at a time.

President Richard Nixon
After the 1960s all was lost. The 1970s brought in an era of disco where it became cool to experiment with drugs and sexuality. Then what happened? STDs! Then enter the 1980s and the emergence of rap and punk rock. Now you had kids not only wearing jeans, but jeans with holes in them! At the same time, you had kids wearing their hats sideways and ditching their doc martins for ‘sneakers’. The 90s were, of course, dominated by grunge and this is where the world entered a sloppy depression. It is now time that we fight our way back to the golden era of the suit wearing, scotch drinking, gentlemen! We must stay the course and overcome this problem of sloppiness once and for all!
So I say to you all: Next time you meet with friends, attend class, go to the theatre, visit the mall or enter public life of any kind, please wear a collared shirt! It is the least you can do!
“Scholars and Scallywags”
Now, I introduce to you a segment much like Bill O’Reilley’s “Pin Heads & Patriots”. I call my version: “Scholars and Scallywags” Our first scallywag is Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner for losing the Super Bowl due to his SLOPPINESS. With less than one minute remaining in the first half, the Cardinals were down inside Pittsburgh’s ten yard line. Warner, looking sloppier than ever wearing his XXL jersey, threw an interception which was run back 100 yards for a Steelers touchdown. Clearly if Warner had worn a jersey that fit him properly he would have thrown a touchdown to lead going into half time.
Our first Scholar is, of course, the late General George Washington. Not only did General Washington lead the Continental Army in a crushing defeat over the British Empire, secure American independence and become the first president of the United States, he did so while looking scholarly, well kept and handsome. We should all strive to be a little bit more like General Washington.
The other day I was having a “conversation” with a server at a restaurant and she used the word “OMG” as if it was part of our vernacular. Needless to say, I have become appalled that this and other Internet terms have become common language. While the Internet has provided society with great benefits by uniting the world on a common platform, it has also brought about a socially inept generation. Driven by a pervasive laziness that exists, the Social Networking Tools and Instant Messaging applications have turned into a launching pad for the abhorrent use of clumsy abbreviations and outright gibberish. To that end, the language that was once reserved for Internet speak is now creeping its way into daily conversation.
Even in business, I am constantly receiving e-mails that are littered with both spelling mistakes and horrible punctuation. To communicate on a professional level with such errors displays a lack of respect for yourself and the person on the receiving end. Check out this e-mail I received the other day from a Director of Information Technology at a large company:

I would be quixotic to think that the people of North America could be masters of the English language, however I think at least basic standards should exist. Further, it would be narcissistic of me to assume that my own comprehension of grammar rules and word use was at an expert level (this will serve as a disclaimer for this post). But I hope that people start to wake up and see we are going down a dangerous path. Maybe we will get to a point where people can no longer communicate at a verbal level and have to draw emoticons and pictures to “talk”. Just like the cyclical nature of the economic markets, communication will come full circle and we will go back to the Neolithic age by drawing pictures on the walls of caves. At least the world will be at lot more simple.

I would like to know where Obama has been hiding his money tree. Maybe he found a leprechaun with a pot of gold. Just last November, the news broke that the US might lose their AAA credit rating and that was long before any kind of crazy spending bill. Credit rating determines an entities capacity to repay debt. If the credit rating of the US were to dramatically fall, creditors (such as China and Japan) would then raise the interest rates they charge to the US on the loans they provide. And when the US is borrowing trillions to cover domestic deficits, even a fraction of a one percent increase has massive cost ramifications.
Just yesterday, the House passed a bill that included thousands of earmarked projects that amounted to another $410+ Billion.
The House yesterday passed a $410 billion bill to fund government operations through September, brushing aside Republican complaints that the measure included too much unnecessary spending and could lead to the end of a school voucher program for Washington.
And then today, the news breaks that Obama is seeking another $634 Billion to cover the medicare project. All in all, the deficit has now ballooned from 1.5 Trillion (initial estimate) to an exorbinant 1.75 Trillion with other spending measures surely to come! Where is the fiscal responsibility in all of this?
Obama seeks $634B over 10 years for health care
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is asking Congress to raise taxes on the wealthy and cut Medicare costs to provide health care for the uninsured while making the just-enacted $400 tax cut for most workers permanent.
In a budget blueprint easily exceeding $3 trillion for 2010, Obama proposes setting aside $634 billion over the next decade to expand government subsidized health coverage — a little more than half the money needed to ensure that every American gets medical care.
Obama is also expected to ask Congress for an additional $75 billion to cover the costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through September.
The disclosures came from three administration officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the budget won’t be made public until Thursday.
Obama said in his speech to Congress last night that he doesn’t want to create debts for our children and their children, but his actions don’t seem to match his words. Spending our way out of a recession is not the solution in the short term. Also, the long term effects of amassing the level of debt required to fund these deficits will cripple the US’ financial power.
Patrick Michaels, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, has released a new book outlining his research on Global Warming, oh sorry, climate change. The book titled, “Climate of Extremes: Global Warming Science They Don’t Want You to Know” claims that global warming research is exaggerated and extreme.
During a lecture last Thursday at the Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. he said, “The discussion surrounding global warming has become wildly extreme,” he told a packed auditorium. “You either believe it’s the end of the world unless we do something about it right now, or you’re a denier.” Since pop culture has made global warming a scientific fact, anyone who questions the validity of the theory is immediately looked upon as a denier and an idiot.
Michaels criticized scientists‘ widespread acceptance of the computer climate change models, saying that the models have projected higher temperatures than have actually occurred in recent years.
“[There is a] systematic failure of computer models,” he said. “What warming there is, is at or below the lower limits of computer models.”
Prevalent claims that global warming is occurring at an ever increasing rate are troubling, Michaels said. Charts of recent temperatures show constant, linear warming, he said.
Scientific literature, which Michaels said should present an equal distribution of positive and negative conclusions about climate change trends, is overwhelmingly pessimistic, Michaels said.
This phenomenon can be partially attributed to the “small inbred community” of scientists who peer review global warming research, he said.
There is also evidence that individuals, societies and economies can adapt to warmer temperatures.
I am glad to see there are scientist out there standing up against this outrageous phenomenon. It is only a matter of time until pop culture finds something new to fixate on and this whole global warming trend is long forgotten. I can guarantee that people will lose interest before any actual change takes place. For the time being I guess we all have to cope with smug Hollywood types and College Know it all hippie types running their mouths about how the world is going to end. Buzz words like climate change may have helped Obama get elected, but sooner or later they will lose their buzzzzzzzzzz.
Two rockets were fired by Hamas militants today from Gaza into Israel. The ultra terrorist organization, Hamas, is comprised of mostly Palestinian militants with one goal; to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. The rockets were fired just weeks after Israeli troops pulled out of Gaza after a month of combat. In the last few days rockets have also been launched from Lebanon into northern Israel.
Although nobody has been injured by the lastest attacks, it is unlikely this will not stir up more violence in the region. Israel has made it quite clear they will not stand idle while their nation is under attack.
Hamas wants Israel to open Gaza’s border crossings, but Israel says it won’t until Hamas frees an Israeli soldier held since June 2006.
Hamas says that will only happen if Israel releases hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including high-ranking militants and the masterminds of deadly suicide bombings.
Clearly there is no sign that the violence between Palestinians and Israelis is going to stop any time soon. What I cannot understand is why the American Government, specifically the Obama Administration, is ear marking $900 million to send to Gaza for reconstruction. The money is going to be wasted because fighting between the two nations is going to occur again meaning any rebuilding that takes place just becomes a new target which will undoubtedly be destroyed and thus need to be rebuilt again and again.
Also, any money sent over to Gaza will be in control of the Palestinian authority and no matter what they say, anyone can see the money is going to trickle down to Hamas. In essense the Obama Administration is going to be funding the perpetuation of this violence. Since America is a large supplier of arms and money to Israel already, it seems the US is paying for both sides to fight it out. Meanwhile back home the American deficit continues to grow at an alarming rate. It makes no sense. Rather than sending money to rebuild Gaza, why not just send them money to move out of Gaza. This is a very complex situation and I do not mean to make light of it, but at the end of the day one thing is clear. The US should not send money to rebuild a haven for terrorist activity.
Check out an article at Founders Freedom.
While attending class the discussion moved to the United States and the period of the Bush Administrations. The comments, as expected, were quite hostile and very anti-sympathetic. Some of the comments were as follows:
George Bush and his administration has created a culture of fear within the United States. You notice it when you enter an airport or government building, men with machine guns greet you and intimidate you.
The Patriot Act was created to build fear among the US citizens because if the people fear the government, it can do whatever it wants.
The US media is a branch of the government used to keep the people in fear so that they are always suspicious of one another and let the government do what it wants.
Firstly, if you are one who believes that the mass media is teamed up with the government to coerce you into doing anything against your will, you my friend are just as much a product of the system as I am for believing in journalistic integrity. For you see, people like Michael Moore, Noam Chompsky and Al Gore are all making a large profit off of your naivety . The endless amount of documentaries, books and outright propaganda is outrageous. Yet, they continue to openly badmouth their country’s leader for policies which keep their children sleeping soundly at night not fearing a real threats: missiles from gaza, columbian druglords
Seconldy, Mass media has been trying so hard not to be bias that they have, in my opinion, crossed over to being consistently liberal minded. CNN, for example, can almost be considered one of Barack Obama’s campaign contributors as it won him the Democratic primaries by constantly slandering Senator Hillary Clinton.
Thirdly, the Patriot Act has been critized for apporpriate reasons but unrealistic situations. Yes, the Patriot Act does infiringe on some people’s rights, but only those who commit crimes. So, after Barack Obama closes GTMO and the terrorists are moved to US prisons, we can all cheer on the savior of the free world for truly bringin terrorism back to American soil.
Lastly, if you call armed guards at US airports and government buildings a plot to scare people, think back to 911 when armed terrorists highjacked planes and flew them into the world trade center. 911 is exactly the reason it is necessary to have armed personel at airports to ensure YOUR security while flying.
For all of those who are scared of their government and hate it because it may treat some criminals like criminals, remember, FREEDOM ISN’T FREE.
What’s up with these Rappers and Athletes being constantly arrested on weapons related charges? I mean here are people that are literally making millions of dollars and despite this still feel the need to act like they are tough as though that some how embodies their celebrity status. By giving these people light sentences, it only helps to perpetuate this facade of the “glamorous” thug lifestyle. I think the legal system needs to take a hard stance to this and make an example out of these idiots. I think by allowing these celebrities – who are worshipped by the youths of North America – to get off lightly, it makes their actions seem “cool” and kids aspire to follow in their footsteps. Let’s get back to our core values and make working hard “cool” again. Here are some examples:
Judge allows gun as evidence in trial of rapper Lil Wayne
NEW YORK – A New York City judge says a handgun found on Lil Wayne’s tour bus after a 2007 concert can be used as evidence at the rapper’s trial.
Rapper T.I. arrested on machine gun charges, misses BET show
The entertainer, whose real name is Clifford Harris, was arrested in a federal sting Saturday after his bodyguard-turned-informant delivered three machine guns and two silencers to the hip-hop star, according to a Justice Department statement.
Authorities said that Harris, 27, provided the bodyguard $12,000 to buy the weapons, which Harris is not allowed to own because he is a convicted felon. Court documents said Harris was convicted on felony drug charges in 1998, and a federal affidavit said he has been arrested on gun charges in the past.
Giants’ Burress accidentally shoots self in leg
The New York Post cited sources who said that Burress shot himself after midnight at the LQ nightclub and needed to be hospitalized.
The Post also said that Burress, 31, was allegedly trying to enter the club with teammate Antonio Pierce when they were stopped by security guards.
Burress, who caught the game-winning touchdown against the Patriots in January, admitted to the guards that he was carrying a gun. He then allegedly went over to a secluded area with a guard and took the gun out, the Post said.
Burress apparently started trying to unload the gun and bobbled it. An accidental shot went off and went through his leg.

I just laughed when I read this.
Is it a giant mystery river snake — or just a Photoshop job?
London’s Daily Telegraph greeted readers Friday morning with photos of what appeared to be a gigantic serpent wending its way down a tropical river, said to be somewhere on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo, “sparking great concern among local communities.”
But the rival Guardian refrained from jumping on the story — and instead declared it to be a fake that looked as if it had been “drawn by a pre-school child with their first green felt tip.”
The Telegraph said only that the snake had been seen in the Baleh River, which is in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. It didn’t mention who took the photo, or where and when it was taken.
I am sure most of you saw this story a few days ago and were amazed by the size of this snake. Well it turns out that the snake was just an over zealous computer nerd at it again. I love how quickly the media will grab a story and push it around the globe.
Kudos to him for getting international coverage.
UPDATE: Read a follow Up Article on this story.
I have in the past worked for some corporate giants who don’t seem to have much care for the individual employee. During my employment stint, I was privy to much of the internal documentation and customer information. Due to use of a personal laptop at work, I often found myself with heaps of data residing on my laptop even after my employment ended. What I had always marvelled was at the lack of control and insistence the company would put forth to make sure the privy data was eradicated or protected. Rather, they seemed to take a laissez faire attitude towards the whole affair. If proprietary information was the driving force behind these companies, you would think they would take a more proactive approach to protecting it.
Exiting workers taking confidential data with them
As layoffs continue apace, a survey released on Monday shows what many companies fear–exiting workers are taking a lot more with them than just their personal plants and paperweights.
Of about 950 people who said they had lost or left their jobs during the last 12 months, nearly 60 percent admitted to taking confidential company information with them, including customer contact lists and other data that could potentially end up in the hands of a competitor for the employee’s next job stint.
The survey also found that many companies seem to be lax in protecting against data theft during layoffs. Eighty-two percent of the respondents said their employers did not perform an audit or review of documents before the employee headed out the door and 24 percent said they still had access to the corporate network after leaving the building.
In the midst of the recession with thousands of jobs being shed at these corporate giants and SME’s, I think a disgruntled unemployed workforce has been created. While these people are not malicious by nature, I think you will find they have a negative attitude towards their upheaval from their jobs. Recently, I read an article that the ex-employees of Microsoft got a letter to state that they had been overpaid on their severance and Microsoft was demanding the money returned. How many of these people do you think will actually return the money? Think of the legal costs Microsoft would have to spend to recoup a couple thousand dollars from each person. Although this would be an impossible metric to track, it would be interesting to see to what extent the corporate information that changes hands has had detrimental effect on the original company.
The United States is about to release details of their plan to give over $900 Million to help the Palestinian authority. The money is being called humanitarian and rebuilding relief and is intended to help Palestine rebuild after the Israeli attacks on Hamas last month. Liberal democrat Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, is in the process of scheduling a trip to Isreal where she will meet with Palestinian authorities and hand over the money. Palestinian authorities claim the money will not be going to Hamas; however, is it possible to think some of this money will NOT be in the hands of terrorists?
A U.S. official in the United States said Monday that the Obama administration’s donation will likely top $900 million in humanitarian and rebuilding aid to the Palestinian Authority to help Gaza recover from Israel’s offensive against Hamas last month.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the donation had not received final approval, said the exact amount was still to be determined.
The official added that the aid would not go to Hamas. U.S. officials have no formal contacts with the Islamic militant group Hamas, which runs a separate Palestinian administration in the Gaza Strip.
Here you go America. The great savior. Change. Hope. Terrorism.
Tax dollars at work. This stimulus package is working out really well for those lucky enough to live in Palestine, especially Hamas. This sort of reminds me of the Carter administration sending millions into a little anti-Soviet nation in an effort to gain American support in the region and help rebuild after conflicts with the USSR during the cold war. A little harmless country called Afghanistan. I guess we did have to suffer through the Carter Administration to get the Reagan Administration.
Last night at the Academy Awards, Sean Penn won the award for Best Male Lead Actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in the movie Milk. Of course, as would any self serving liberal Hollywood elitist, Penn used the podium for his acceptance speech as a pulpit to lecture all of us unenlightened hicks about the latest trendy injustice.
He, like so many before him, pretended that he was unprepared to take the stage. He “did not expect” to win but of course was touched enough to write down a few names. After the regular onslaught of thank-you’s, Sean had to get back to his contradictory and condescending liberal agenda.
For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight and I think that it is a good time for those that voted FOR the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support.
Do you think this ass hole realizes that some people on this earth do not believe the same things he does and that maybe there is a chance that his incredibly condescending attitude makes people sick. I hope that nobody that voted to ban gay marriage feels shame. Penn starred in Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982… meaning since he was 22 years old he has not had to worry about anything financially. After last night’s display by Penn and many others I have concluded that South Park got it right. These people are such smug ass holes that all they do is sit around all day smelling their own filth, praising themselves, while preying on the millions of dollars spent by hard working people at the box office to feed their own self service existence.
To that I say, pull the trigger and kill yourself Sean Penn, you Ass Hole!!
Just last week there was a discovery by way of Google Earth for what was speculatively called “Atlantis” – the ancient lost city in the sea. Using the technology of Google Earth, many such ancient mysteries and undiscovered lands have been tracked down. In this particular discovery, Google was quick to dismiss the discovery as “data artifacting” which is the result of data overlay from sonar boats mapping the ocean. However, previous Google Earth discoveries have been substantiated. There was the lost world discovered in Mozambique. A fringing coral reef discovered off a remote coast of Western Australia. And also an ancient Roman villa in a previously thought greenspace.

Technology has certainly shrunk the world, but will also continue to open up the doors and keys to our universe. Who would have guessed that the next Vasco De Gama or Christopher Columbus would be someone staring at a computer screen from the comfort of their home?
Google Sinks Atlantis Discovery Buzz
Last week, a British man announced he’d found the lost city of Atlantis using Google Ocean — the latest add-on to Google Earth that features 3D bathymetry, which lets you explore the ocean floor. The supposed ‘Atlantis’ image is about 620 miles off the northwestern coast of Africa and south of Portugal. It shows a rectangular grid with what looks like roadways leading away from it at the coordinates 31 15’15.53N 24 15’30.53W. According to The Telegraph, the newspaper that first reported the “discovery,” the pattern is roughly the size of Wales (around 8,000 sq. mi.).
At the recent TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference, MIT researcher, Pattie Maes presented a new technology interface that gets me pretty fired up. Pattie demonstrated a $350 piece of technology that has been named ‘The Sixth Sense.’ The technology allows it users to control electronic devices with simple hand gestures. For example, making a phone call by holding out your left hand to project the number key pad, then using your right hand to touch the buttons. Can you believe this!!!
Here is how it works.
What the researchers have done is combine a number of standard gadgets including a webcam, projector, and mobile phone, to form a brand new interaction experience. In its current form the battery-powered projector is attached to a hat, the webcam is hung around the neck (or also positioned on a hat), and the mobile phone provides the connection to the Internet.
The wearer uses hand gestures combined with the gadgets to perform actions. So, for example, they could make a circle over their wrist with the fingers of one hand. WUW would recognize this action and project a clock face on to their wrist. Make a picture frame with both your hands and WUW will take a picture as if it was a camera. Stand near a wall and you can get a projected desktop allowing you to open applications, view the pictures you’ve taken, or surf the ‘Net.
At the moment it is just a prototype system, but because it uses off-the-shelf components the cost of creating one is just $300 for the hardware involved.
I am glad to see that research is going in the right direction. I cannot wait until I can just walk around with nothing and have electronic gadgets do everything and provide me with whatever info I need, in real time. Look back a few decades and imagine having to find a phone number for a local service, say an autobody shop. A phone book or something? Imagine if you were to attempt this feat today. A cell phone and Google Maps. Imagine with this new technology. It seems that it will be able to find it, give you reviews and information, and make the call. I love it.
Watch this video and get fired up.
Take note at the very end when he needs to check the time. Awesome!
Obama caps executive pay tied to bailout money
WASHINGTON – U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday imposed US$500,000 caps on senior executive pay for the most distressed financial institutions receiving federal bailout money, saying Americans are upset with “executives being rewarded for failure.”
Obama announced the dramatic new government intervention into corporate America at the White House, with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner at his side. The president said the executive-pay limits are a first step, to be followed by the unveiling next week of a sweeping new framework for spending what remains of the US$700-billion financial industry bailout that Congress created last year.
With all the claims of change being preached, you would expect some to actually come to fruition. This executive salary cap is just another smokescreen for public opinion. It does nothing to discourage the high risk behavior that drove the United States into the economic catastrophe it is in now. What is the point of capping a senior executive’s salary while leaving the traders, hedge fund manager and those derivatives manufacturers with no penalty whatsoever. They are the ones playing fast and loose, and the ones making exorbitant amounts of cash. It is completely pointless to cap the guys managing these brokers. Would you take your boss seriously if you made 10 times what he did?
This will also lead to outsourcing as we saw in the past with Harvard’s massive endowment. The managers were criticized for the huge salaries they were making, so they simply opened their own firms and had the endowment outsourced to these new firms, they were paid in assets as opposed to cash and bonus and the criticism stopped. This did nothing to diminish risk taking and led one newly created firm dishing Harvard a $350 million dollar loss.
It is just a political parlor trick to portray an administration in control of its financial markets. Better luck next time and maybe come up with something that might actually do something to change the way finance is orchestrated. This is just another example of the contradictory practices of US economics. Free market economies should be left to run themselves, whether it’s into the ground or into success. To ask the government to intervene and bail you out is to allow the government to manage where the money goes.
